Why you will LOVE this recipe:

    • Easy: The filling is made of a few simple ingredients, and they’re so easy to put together.
    • Chocolate glaze: There’s nothing better than a rich, sweet, glaze on top of a buttery pastry.
    • Cream cheese: The filling is made with cream cheese and packed with crushed oreos. It turns out so creamy and tastes like cookies and cream.
    • Egg free: These are naturally egg free and can be gluten free if you swap a gluten free pie crust for the regular pie crust.

Why this is exponentially better than storebought

Homemade pop tarts are a game changer! They're way better than store bought, are super fresh, and not cloyingly sweet. The best part is how you can make them much thicker and add way more chocolate icing.

Even if you use storebought pie crust, these oreo pop tarts are way better than out of the package.

    The filling

Nothing screams more "oreo" than a cream cheese oreo filling. It has 4 ingredients and couldn't be easier to make.

    Make ahead

Make one or two batches and freeze them wrapped individually in some parchment paper. When you want to eat them, pop them in the microwave or in the oven for a minute.

They really do need to be served warm or at room temperature because the pastry becomes soft and flaky.

    Key ingredients

Full steps and ingredients in recipe card below. But read through these for all the tips you will need for success!

Pie crust: Use a storebought crust or this recipe for the flakiest all butter pie crust. For reference, you'll need a double pie crust (2 rounds). Most packages come with two and the recipe also makes 2.

Powdered sugar: Powdered or icing sugar works great! This allows it to dissolve quickly in the filling and makes a creamy, smooth icing.

Oreos: There are oreos in the filling and on top. You can use whatever oreo flavour you prefer or any other similar sandwhich cookie.

Cream cheese: Use a full fat, brick style cream cheese for best results. Low fat cream cheese will be too watery.

    Step by step

Step 1 - Make your pie crust or follow the instructions on the pie crust package to defrost. Homemade pie crust will taste better, but store bought makes a great shortcut and they’ll still taste delicious.

Step 2 - In a large bowl, combine cream cheese and powdered sugar, mix until smooth. Add vanilla extract and mix well. Fold oreos.

    mixing cream cheese oreo filling

Step 3 - Roll or lay out the first pie crust. Mark about six rectangles 1.5” by 3” (see photos for how I did that). Place 2-3 tablespoons of filling into the middle of each marked rectangle, leaving ½” border all the way around.

    • Adding filling to pie crust

Step 4 - Brush milk on the pie crust in between the filling. This will help seal the edges. Place rolled out second crust on top and press down in between the filling to seal in all the edges. Cut the rectangles out and trim the rounded edges.

Step 5 - Use a fork to press down all the way around each pop tart to help seal the edges. Pierce each top with a fork to help let steam through. Arrange onto a baking sheet, leaving an inch or two gap between each pop tart.

Step 6 - Bake at 355°F (180°C) for 15-18 minutes, until edges and bottom are a light golden brown. Let cool on baking sheet or cooling rack until warm.

Step 7 - Whisk together powdered sugar and cocoa powder. Add milk a tablespoon at a time, mixing well until it forms a very thick but pourable consistency.

Step 8 - Using a tablespoon, spoon the icing on top of the pop tarts. Crumble oreo cookies on top of each pop tart and leave for a few minutes to set. Enjoy!
