These black velvet cupcakes are ultra tender and soft, and are naturally colored! It has a similar texture to red velvet cupcakes, but with black cocoa powder for flavor and color. And a naturally colored chocolatey cream cheese frosting.

Cupcake Batter: – black cocoa powder – water – oil – softened – sugar – sea salt – 2 eggs – vanilla extract – vinegar white – buttermilk – flour – baking powder – baking soda Frosting: – butter – powdered sugar – black cocoa powder – cream cheese – vanilla extract – sea salt – whipping cream
Black velvet cupcake batter: Preheat the oven. Line a cupcake pan with liners. Whisk together cocoa powder and hot water until fully combined. Set aside.
Mix oil, butter, sugar, and salt until creamy and lightened in color.
Add eggs, mix well to combine. Add vanilla, vinegar, and buttermilk into the mixture, mix well to combine.
Sift flour, baking powder, and baking soda. Fold batter with a whisk to combine.
Halfway through mixing, add the dissolved cocoa powder mixture and fold with a whisk to combine.
Scoop the batter into the liners, filling them three quarters of the way up. Bake for 18-20 minutes. Let cool for 5 minutes.
Black cream cheese frosting: Add butter, Beat until creamy and lightened color. Add powdered sugar, half a cup at a time and mix until creamy. Add cocoa powder and beat well.
Add cream cheese, Beat well between each addition until light and creamy. Add vanilla, salt, and mix together. Add whipping cream into the frosting for fluffier texture. Transfer into a piping bag with a large star tip.
Cake assembly: With your piping bag pipe the frosting in a tower on top of each cupcake. Enjoy!
