This black velvet cake is naturally colored, rich, moist, has a luscious chocolate cream cheese frosting, and a vibrant red cherry filling. It has the rich and tender texture of a red velvet cake but uses black cocoa powder to make it black.

Black cocoa cake layers: Grease three round pan with butter, preheat oven. Add cocoa powder into bowl. Pour hot water into the cocoa powder and whisk until smooth. Set aside
Combine butter, oil, sugar, and salt. Beat with an electric mixer until light in color and creamy. Add eggs, one by one, beating well in between each egg.
Add vanilla, vinegar, and buttermilk, mix until mixture is runny.
Sift flour, baking powder, and baking soda. Fold with whisk until mostly combined.
Pour cocoa powder mixture into the cake batter and fold. Give the batter a few quick whisks with the whisk.
Evenly divide the batter among the three cake pans. Spread out the cake batter to level and bake for 16-18 minutes.
Frosting: Add butter, Beat until smooth. Add powdered sugar, cup by cup, beating well in between each cup. Add cream cheese and beat until smooth and fluffly.
Add vanilla, salt, and cocoa powder into the same bowl and beat until smooth and fluffy.
Cake assembly: Add the first cake layer, right side up. Spread a thin layer of frosting and pipe a border around the perimeter.
Fill the middle with cherry filling, stack, and repeat until the very last layer. Place the last layer of cake on top, bottom side up. Cover cake with a thin layer of frosting, smooth, and freeze the cake for 10 minutes.

Frost the outside of the cake with more frosting, smoothing the sides and top. Use piping tips to pipe borders and swoops on the cake. Slice and serve!
